My Favorite Senator

NRO notes that Senator Byrd voted for Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit after having voted four times to filibuster her nomination. That's interesting I guess, though I don't know that anyone should be shocked that party politics plays a part in Senators' vote. I mean, they have a position called the "Whip" for goodness sake - what do you expect.

More interesting to me is this: how is it every time I flip past CSPAN Senator (or is it Imperial Grand Wizard?) Byrd is at the microphone? Try it right now - there's like a 50% chance (very scientific forecasting) you'll see him if you turn it on right now. He just goes on forever! And it has that car wreck captivating quality to it. He shouts and preaches and has like 35 second dramatic pauses. He never talks about anything that has happened since 1820 - he may not recall anything else. I'm not even sure how he realizes West Virginia is now state of its own - he may think he was elected to represent the western part of Virginia. And you just know he's the only one in the capital other than the cameraman. It's great, you should watch it sometime.
