Trent Lott: I Hope He is Not Smart

I really hope Trent Lott is just incredibly tone deaf and dim witted. Because the alternative is much worse. During the debate period for the symbolic anti-lynching bill (80 co-sponsors, Lott not one of them) Senator Lott gave a speech about the nomination of Thomas B. Griffith to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. During the entire speech he made no mention of the anti-lynching bill.

Now, considering the trouble Trent Lott has had with racial issues in the past, you would think he would be smart enough to realize how bad this looks. If you lost your leadership position because of racially insensitive things you have said, maybe you should either toss in a word of support for the bill, or just refrain from speaking and pimp the judge some other time.
